Paint by Numbers kit – 5 Amazing Tips for Beginners

In this article, we will give you a few tips to make the best out of your Paint by Numbers kit. Whether you are a kid or an adult this article is for you!

If you are new at this, there are a few things you should definitely know before starting. DonElton has 5 secrets that will make the difference with your paint by numbers kit.

Here are a few tips to nail it on your first try!

1. Get your paint by numbers kit ready!

First of all, you need our paint by numbers kit of course! Take everything out of the kit, the 3 brushes, the canvas, and the high-quality acrylic paint.

Make sure to protect your table with paper towels. Trust me it would be worth it. We never know what will happen while painting and it is better to protect the table than having to wash it later. It will also be useful if you need to clean your hands, you don’t want to put paint on your masterpiece by mistake! And of course, you will need a paper towel to wash your brushes. Once you cleaned them with water, you need to wipe them with a towel to make sure they are not too wet.

The other thing you will need is a glass of water. This glass of water will be useful to clean your brushes when you will have to paint with a different color. Washing your brushes when you change color is very important, not doing it could ruin your masterpiece. If you don’t, you will mix the colors and your artwork won’t look as good as it should.

2. Iron the canvas before painting

Sometimes the canvas can have little wrinkles or marks on it when you take it out of your paint by numbers kit. Maybe because of the transportation or because you folded it. Don’t worry it is totally possible to get rid of these wrinkles and have a perfectly flat canvas!

All you need to do is to iron the canvas. But be careful, you should not iron the printed side. Flip the canvas and iron the white side. Otherwise, it could damage the numbers or the lines. While ironing, avoid using steam. This could also damage your paint by numbers.

As we are also selling paint by numbers for kids, I prefer to warn you, if you are a child, don’t do it yourself, ask your parents!

3. Paint in the right order

Sometimes when we are painting, our hands can mess it up! All it takes is one second of inattention. You touch an area that is not dry and make a mess on your artwork. Here is DonEtlon’s advice to avoid smudging and take the best out of your paint by numbers kit!

If you are right-handed, you must start painting on the top left corner. Always paint from the top left corner to the right bottom corner.

If you are left-handed, to the contrary! Always start on the top right corner and end on the bottom left corner.

With this technic, your hands will never touch paint and you will never ruin your beautiful paint by numbers!

4. Start with the dark colors

Once you have taken everything out of your paint by numbers kit and you are ready to paint, you should start with dark colors! Starting with dark colors will help you to see the main lines of your paintings. It will shape your painting, and it will help you later. You will understand the painting better which will help you not to make mistakes.

I know it sounds a bit scary to start with black or grey, but believe me, the result will be nice!

5. Use the guide from your paint by numbers kit!

If it is one of your first paintings, at some point, you might get lost. You might have painted an area with the wrong color for example. But don’t panic it is not a problem!

All you need to do is use the reference guide that is included in your paint by numbers kit. Everything is in this guide; you will be able to see the lines or the numbers. It is very easy to understand, and it really helps to understand what mistakes we have made. But it is not a problem, the only thing that matters is to spot the mistake to correct it and end up with an amazing piece of art!
